1919 Maclean's March Chocolate
-
Chocolate - a food | IT is now universally admitted that chocolate is a food--a sustaining food. During the war millions of tons of chocolate were sent to the Front. Our Canadian soldiers early found that eating chocolate was not only pleasing to the taste, but restored vitality and gave renewed energy. Brigadier-General L.W. Waller of the U.S. Marines, referring to the food value of chocolate, said--"I never went into a campaign without chocolate. I always have a few cakes in my haversack when I go into action. Men fight like the devil on chocolate. Seasoned soldiers take it on the march with them." It is a matter of actual scientific demonstration that one pound of chocolate produces the same amount of body-building nutriment as six eggs, a pint of milk and one pound of steak. As a ready, nourishing and sustaining food, chocolate is unequalled. Serve Chocolate as a Dessert. It is a splendid food. The Confectionery of Chocolate Industries of Canada, This is a medium-sized ad for Chocolate as a whole, by The Confectionery and Chocolate Industries of Canada. Quotations from high-ranking war figures are used to further promote chocolate as an everyday and nutritious food.

1919 Maclean's November Neilson's Chocolates
-
It is my first time seeing an ad for this product., The Quality of Neilson's is not Strained | ONE, William Shakespeare, created a character, Portia, who said to Shylock, "The quality of mercy is not strained." People who have read it have never forgotten it. But few reflect that the quality of anything is not strained. If it were, then it would cease to be quality. What, then, do we mean by adapting it to Neilson's? Just this: that from the cocoa-beans of which we make our coatings, to the fruits, nuts, creams and other confetions that we use for fillings, we use only the finest materials. This quality is also paramount in our process of manufacture, and packing, because many a box of chocolates is bought on appearance. Although the artistry of our boxes may not appeal to all, it certainly will appeal to people of refinement. And it is these people who will most apprecaite the delicacy of flavour and unstrained quality of Neilson's Chocolates. Neilson's "The Chocolates that are Different", This is a full-page sad for Neilson's Chocolates. The quality is emphasized, and there is an illustration of a Shakespearean play, and of a box of chocolates.
