Abstract |
This very large square mosaic shows round and hexagonal medallions of interwoven laurel bands each with a divine, human or animal figure. In the central medallion is a nude Venus, adjusting her sandal. Other medallions show gladiators, venatores, musicians and animals, the performers in the amphitheatre spectacles.
Round and hexagonal medallions show (top to bottom, left to right): a musician playing a tuba; a gladiator (murmillo); a arena attendant with a curved staff; a venator armed with a spear facing right and a boar running left. |
