Abstract From 1971 to 1974, Manitoulin Island suicide rate amounted to 23.4 per 100,000 people. From 1976 to 1980 these rates increased to 27.7 per 100,000 individuals. "In the five years following the suicide epidemic, the rate for the Reserve decreased from 267 per 100,000 in 1975 for a 12 month period to an average of 26.7 per 100,000 per year, the level for the rest of Manitoulin Island."
